Bowen Island Undercurrent - Learn about changes to garbage collection
(I am relived to learn that the changes will be implemented starting in July. This gives us more time to adjust and learn more about the new garbage changes. Meanwhile I have ordered this compost pail that will sit on the counter to be able to recycle food waste. Good looking don't you think?)
"Bowen Islanders already participate actively in the multi-faceted recycling program at BIRD and they will soon be able to do even more to decrease our carbon-footprint. Beginning in early July (not June 4 as announced earlier), island residents will be asked to separate food scraps from garbage. These food scraps, along with yard trimmings, will be diverted to the Fraser Richmond Soil composting facility. This change will significantly reduce the production of methane that would ordinarily have happened in the garbage land fill. In the long run, the municipality’s Solid Waste Management Advisory Committee hopes to have all our organic waste, including food scraps, processed here on Bowen, reducing the footprint even more.
A public information meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 19 at 10 to 11:30 am in the council chambers. At this time you will learn how this change to garbage collection will take place and provide feedback to the committee.
There will be demonstrations, samples, and time for questions. We encourage your participation. More information will be published soon here, in mail-out flyers, on the municipality’s web site and in other media. Watch for them."
